The Department of Education’s decision to cancel the Irish and Modern Language Orals is welcome news to those studying these subjects. For those students struggling with Irish, they have now automatically passed the subject. They already have 40%.

There is a flip side to this, which is that points will automatically go up for popular courses. We will be on hand to ensure that students do not miss out on their choices due to a lack of teaching or support. Just let us know what you would like to happen and we will organise what we can.

It looks like the Junior Cert will be cancelled for this year. Knowing this, there is still a chance that the Leaving Certificate will go ahead in June as planned. With no other students in the school, it will be possible to respect social distancing. However, we must be cognisant of the fact that they may not go ahead until later in the summer, or even in September.

We are still providing our Leaving Cert grinds for Maths, Applied Maths, and Physics. We will also be arranging grinds online in other subjects and for other years, if required.

We can facilitate one-to-one grinds in Chemistry, Biology, Maths, English, Ag Science, Physics and others. These will be faciliatated by other teachers. All appropriate measures will be taken to ensure student and teacher safety, including no overlap of students in the building, sanitisers available, strict distancing and tables cleaned before and after every class, and gloves and wipes available in the classrooms.

I know a lot of people are in self-isolation (myself included). That does not mean we have to throw in the towel on our daily routine. We can still keep your students up to date with what is required. I fully intend to continue teaching, while well enough to do so.

We are also trying to organise a daily 6 hours of timetabled school, broadcast to your home. This depends on numbers so any interested students should inquire, if interested. We are trying to organise this for next week. It will cost €75 per week, but we will need a reasonable of students to achieve this.

In the meantime, please keep safe and listening to the advice.

On a personal note, I just want to let people know that I really do appreciate the trust, faith, support, and patience people have shown during my ongoing illness. It has been a great source of strength to me and my family. We really do appreciate everyoine’s kindness and understanding.

Is mise le meas,

Pat Hurley.
